Tenerife is the largest of 7 main islands in the Atlantic Ocean, that compose the Canarian Islands.

It is of volcanic origin which is the main reason why the majority of beaches on the island are made of black sand. Beaches made of white sand have been man-made and the sand either dredged and cleaned from the bottom of the sea or have been imported from the Sahara Desert.

Virtually in the centre of the island lies the magnificent MOUNT TEIDE (pronounced Tay-dee) which is 3718 metres high. This is in fact the highest in Spain!

The nearest island to any form of main land is only 108km from the northwest African coast.

The Canary Islands belong to Spain and form
an autonomous community. The language here
is a dialect of Castillian Spanish. Many people
on the island are also able to speak English - so don't worry!
